Star wand My Game Jam Games! Star wand

On this page you can find some details on games I've submitted to game jams in the past. You can view them all on my itch.io page.

Tiny Feast

  • Release Date: Aug 20, 2024
  • Theme: Built to scale
  • Timeline: 4 days
  • Engine: Unity
  • Team size: 4

Tiny Feast was our submission to the 2024 GMTK game jam. We ranked #1088 out of 7540 entries overall, putting us in the top 16%, and ranked #384 in the style category, the top 6%!

We made a cozy, physics-based platformer to chill out to and build piles of stuff. You play as a cute little mouse trying to find all of the cheese in a kitchen. All the household items are to-scale for the mouse, and the mouse has to scale up all the items to reach the cheese!

The team:

  • Me - programming & implementation. I wrote most of the code, set up the behaviour of the game objects, imported most of the assets, made the UI, etc.
  • Karina - 3D art, UI art. Karina pumped out so many assets in such a short time, and they're all so amazing and cute! It really was a herculean effort she put into this game, and our style ranking really shows as a result. Check out her writeup here!
  • Cody - music & sound effects. This was Cody's first game jam, and I think he did a really good job of coming up with snappy sound effects and a cute little tune in such a short time. It was really helpful having him implement the audio in parallel with me developing the game, it saved a lot of time.
  • Morgan - level design & playtesting. This was also Morgan's first game jam, and he really helped by filling in the gaps of playtesting features and arranging assets in the kitchen. He helped come up with a lot of fun ideas and challenges, it was great having him on board!

Overall, I think we really knocked it out of the park with this one. Karina's incredible 3D art turned out so cute, Cody's great implementation of music and sound effects, and Morgan's help constructing the level really came together in such a short time. I'm really proud of what we accomplished!

Cryptid Obscura

  • Release Date: Feb 27, 2022
  • Theme: It is not real
  • Timeline: 1 week
  • Engine: Unity
  • Team size: 4

Cryptid Obscura was our submission to the Brackeys Game Jam 2022.1. We placed #27 out of 1572 entries! I'm really happy with how this game turned out.

This game came out almost exactly as we envisioned it. Our goal was to make a mix of "Where's Waldo" and "Pokemon Snap", and I think we really hit it on the head!

The team:

  • Me - programming & implementation. I wrote all of the code, imported all of the assets into Unity and hooked everything up.
  • Karina - 3D characters, props, animals, UI design. Karina made all of the characters, including all of their costume variations, as well as all of the super cute critters, and all of the UI design! You can really count on Karina for game jams, she makes so much art at such a high quality bar, it's super impressive. Check out her writeup here!
  • Simone (gummywormfarm) - 3D sets and 2D illustrations. Simone added amazing silly illustrations for the frog man, as well as making the super cute city props. It was awesome having her on the team, she really helped add the signature weird-factor to the game that makes it so unique.
  • Tyler (limitaudio) - music and sound effects. This was my first time working with an audio person in a game jam, and I was surely blessed to work alongside Tyler. He made the most incredible jazzy tune that had smooth transitions between day and night variations, all within such a short time. I highly highly recommend checking out his work and would love to work with him again in the future!

While I am super super proud of the work we did, this jam really stretched me, as it was the first time I made a game with a team larger than 2 people. Also, being the only programmer on the team, and only person familiar with Unity, I ended up stretching myself pretty thin trying to write code and implement all of the amazing assets the rest of the team was pumping out. For the next jam, I resolved to find ways to work in Unity with the rest of the team, so I wouldn't be as much of a bottleneck for the game pipeline.

Shape Escape

  • Release Date: Jun 13, 2021
  • Theme: joined together
  • Timeline: 2 days
  • Engine: Unity
  • Team size: 2

Shape Escape was the first game jam I worked on with my wife, and will always have a special place in my heart. This was for the 2021 GMTK game jam and it's still one of my favourite games. We ranked #405 overall, out of 5642 entries, placing us in around the top 7%! In the presentation category, we placed #281, putting us in around the top 5%!

The team:

  • Me - programming & implementation.
  • Karina - art & implementation. Karina made so much awesome art for this game, from the super cute shape characters, to the terrifying babies, and all the cute toys inbetween, she did it all! Not to mention the awesome UI art! Check out her writeup here!

It took us a really long time to come up with an idea for this game jam, and I think we almost didn't make anything. Then all of a sudden we had this insane thought of playing as sentient shape toys in a daycare where rocket babies fly at you, destroying everything in their path. I'm still super proud of how this turned out, it's exactly how we envisioned it, and super hilarious.
